It seems that the artist has an unusual bond with bicycles since he also had similar work in 2011 dubbed as Forever Bicycles wherein he used 1,200 bicycles. You may want to visit the artists' exhibition at Galleria Continua until February 16th.

Candy was commissioned to create public art for Finland’s 2011 European Capital of Culture events. For this project, a pedestrian/bike path nicknamed Uraputki or “Career Path”, because it is a popular route that students take from their residences to the university, to get a degree to get a job. This path was turned into an interactive space with stenciled fill-in-the-blank sentences to make students reflect on their life choices as far as careers are concerned.

For example, sentences stenciled on the pavement say “When I was little I wanted to be ____. Today I want to be ____.” in Finnish, Swedish, and English. Passersby can use colored chalk to write directly on the pavement and reflect upon their larger life choices. Sun and rain erase the responses and the installation starts again. The project is created with temporary spray chalk and will fade with weather and foot traffic.

This project is about comparing yourself today and when you were young, reflecting on how you’ve changed or stayed the same, and thinking about the desires you had as a child. What made you come alive as a kid and why? How can this help inform the decisions you make today? Some favorites: “When I was little I wanted to be a princess. Today I want to be an electrician.” “When I was little I wanted to be a bird. Today I want to be a speech therapist.” “When I was little I wanted to be a grown-up. Today I want to be a kid.” The project is also about learning from the people around us and humanizing our neglected spaces. The industrial path is now a space to pause, reflect, and share with others.

Accordingly, macro photography refers to extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size (though macrophotography technically refers to the art of making very large photographs). Here's another treat for photography lovers out there. See some of Wil Mijer's amazing photos of insects after the jump!

What the artists have to say:

Starting with a bathymetric chart (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), the contours are laser-cut into sheets of Baltic birch and glued together to create a powerful visual depth. Select layers are hand-colored blue so it's easy to discern land from water, major byways are etched into the land, the whole thing's framed in a custom, solid-wood frame and protected seamlessly with a sheet of durable, ultra-transparent Plexiglas.

There really is something with the moon that leaves people staring at it mesmerized and I guess artist Leonid Tishkov is one of those. His visual poetic installation dubbed as Private Moon is truly spellbinding! ♥

The artist says:

In its unusual position within a landscape, in a stretch of open country, inside some deserted accommodation or water-cooling towers, the artificial moon sheds its light on surrounding objects and offers viewers as they arrive or occasional passers-by a chance to experience the fairytale nature of our existence.

Have a blessed Christmas everyone! Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? Yes, they are not though it can also be said that it is statistically possible. In 1885, Wilson Alwyn Bentley attempted to find identical snowflakes by photographing thousands of them with a microscope that paved the way for the wide variety of snowflakes that we know about today. According to Wikipedia, it is very unlikely for any two snowflakes to be exactly alike due to the roughly 1019 water molecules which make up a typical snowflake, which grow at different rates and in different patterns depending on the changing temperature and humidity within the atmosphere that the snowflake falls through on its way to the ground united.

Now that we have learned something new about snowflakes, check out these amazing macro photos by Andrew Osokin, who is now based in Moscow and also takes photos of insects and raindrop covered spider webs.

Holding a piece of paper on one hand and a lit candle on another, Steven accumulates enough soot on the back of the paper then using his hands or drybrush, smudges the soot to form an artwork.

Years later, his work has evolved into doing lifesize portraits composed of over 200 pieces of paper. These pieces can be stored in a shoebox making it easy to transport to another exhibit.

Take a great look at this collection of Illinois-based artist Beth Ann Magnuson, who patiently turns eggs into carved masterpieces reminiscent of fine Victorian lace, hence, she calls her series as Victorian Lace Eggs. You may want to watch how she does her incredible artworks here.

The artist says:

Since the dawn of man, the egg has been associated with creation. Because they contain new life and such potential, eggs were seen as a tool of divination. Their size, shape, and contents were used to forecast the future. Christians regard the egg as a symbol of the risen Christ. Beautifully decorated Easter eggs are a common tradition throughout Christendom. The Victorians, fond of ornamentation, decorated their eggs with snippets of daily life: trade cards, ribbons, beads, and bits of old lace.
